Steps to categorize manually – Quicken Not Categorizing:

  • First, you need to click on the Spending tab. The Spending tab shows you the transactions from your spending accounts. It also has a cool pie chart that shows you where your money is going.
  • Now Click on the transaction that you want to change the category for.
  • After that click on the download button next to the category, you want to change.
  • Mow Click the category you want from the list. If you don’t see it at first, just start typing its name and Quicken will find it.
  • In case the category you want isn’t on the list, click the Add Category button.

The downloaded or imported transactions are automatically assigned a category based on the following, in this order:

  1. A transaction exists in the Memorized Payee List with a matching payee name with the category.
  2. The financial institution has associated a standard industrial classification (SIC) code with this transaction.
  3. You also have the option to edit the category from the memorized payee list (Click on Tools on the top menu bar, then select Memorized Payee List) and choose the correct category. This will then memorize the payee name to the correct category on future downloads.
  4. Automatic categorization is enabled. To turn off automatic categorization:
    1. Choose Edit menu > Preferences (Quicken Program on earlier versions).
    2. Click Register.
    3. Under Data entry, clear the Use automatic categorization checkbox.

You can also set up Quicken for auto-recognizing the category for a particular payee.

  • First, you to correct the transaction to the proper Category
  • Save it by pressing the enter
  • Right-click it, then click “MEMORIZE TRANSACTION”
